Color Use of CaptainCapitalism.com

Captain Capitalism uses red, white and blue on every page. Curtis argues that colors produce a psychological response (147). The use of the colors of the American flag helps reinforce the idea that the captain is all-American and capitalism is the American way – even if it is done in satire. It helps build on the web sites goal of creating a believable and entertaining character. The humor would be lost if the user thought the Captain was merely posing as someone who believed communism was pure evil.
Lynch and Horton express the importance of using bold colors to emphasize important elements of the site (GENERAL DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS). The bold colors of the captain’s costume contrast the subtler shades of red, white and blue used as background for the web site. There is barely any gray used throughout the web site, as to not dull the meaning. The vibrant colors create energy for the web site meant to be a catalyst for creation.
