Graphic User Interface Analysis of The Big Noob
The graphic user interface (GUI) uses some principles of print media. The page design and its graphics are geometrical, or modern. Smith's image at the top of the page resembles a billboard advertisement. The graphics reflect the "classical screen" (Manovich 95). Familiar graphics allow users to better understand how to navigate the site. Though billboards have historically characterized print media, Manovich connects print media to today's cultural interfaces (65). GUIs employ "metaphors, images, and concepts" to convey meaning (WSG, Interface Design).
The site exposes users to a variety of HCI. According to Manovich, cinema evolves from oil painting. Paintings act as windows into extended spaces. Photographic screens illustrate partial spaces that extend outside the frame (below). Furthermore, dynamic, or moving, screens comprise a large portion of modern HCI (80). Users may visit sites which incorporate cinematic HCI technology, as some links require Flash Media Player, a dynamic screen cultural interface. Readers may access both classical and dynamic screens. Designers prefer familiar interfaces because it makes HCI user efficient (89).
