Graphic User Interface (GUI)

The graphic design interface uses the principles of print media. Print elements influence home page design. Graphics are designed in a manner which reflects the classic screen.  These elements allow users to identify and understand how to better navigate the site. Smith’s image at the top of the page recalls images of a billboard. This advertising technique has historically been limited to print media.  Manovich stresses the impact of earlier forms of media on today’s cultural interfaces (65). Computer Graphic User Interfaces (GUIs) employ “metaphors, images, and concepts” to convey meaning (WSG Interface Design).

The site incorporates older forms of technology. Many links require Flash Media Player. The computer screen reminds users of the influence of movie screens on cultural interface. Manovich’s discussion on screensexplains television’s indelible impression on HCI (75). Smith site incorporates print into its HCI. Computer designers prefer these interfaces because it makes HCI easier (81). The classical screen is seen in the billboard with Brad’s picture.  The dynamic screen in evident in the Flash Player image.
