Facebook Graphics

Facebook allows users to upload as many photos as they please. Users can upload photos in three formats: JPEG, GIF, and PGN files. Two of the basic graphic formats used on the web are JPEG and GIF (Curtis 163). Because JPEG images use a "sliding quality scale to reduce file size" large images will appear less sharp (Curtis 164). Although, JPEG images appear less sharp they will be in full color, whereas GIF files can only display a maximum of 256 colors. PNG graphics on the other hand, offer "a full range of color depths, support for sophisticated image transparency, better interlacing, and automatic corrections for display monitor gamma" (Web Style Guide). PGN graphics are not widely used on the web, but Facebook implements its use to give users a range uploading options (Web Style Guide).

Facebook uses icons that symbolize applications and updates. When someone posts a comment on a user's wall "" marks symbolize that a comment has been made. The "Mood" application icon is a smiley face, which is used to symbolize a user's mood. By the use of these symbolic icons user's are able to choose and differentiate between which application is being utilized. I find this to be important, because if the icons were not there users would have a harder time understanding or clicking the designated application.
